Alberta Health Optometry Changes
March 17, 2025
In January 2025, the Government of Alberta announced changes to the schedule of optometric benefits for Albertans. These changes were implemented on February 1, 2025.
The changes include:
delisting (removal) of partial exams for children aged 18 and under, and for seniors aged 65 and over
reduction or removal of services, including same-day dilated retinal examination during a routine examination for seniors and children
reduction of reimbursement rates
We take pride in providing exceptional eye care to our patients. To continue to deliver on this promise, our office will be changing the cost structure for our services. We appreciate your trust and loyalty to our office, and we thank you for your understanding as we work through the reduced funding amendments. If any changes affect your previously booked appointment, we will endeavor to contact you directly beforehand.
Starting April 1, 2025, there will be the following co-pays:
For senior eye exams (aged 65 and over), there will be a $40 fee.
For child eye exams (between the ages of 5 to 18), there will be a $20 fee.
For children under 5, there will be no fee for the eye exam.
Please visit the Alberta Association of Optometry website for a detailed FAQ on the changes. The Alberta Association of Optometry also has a guide to contacting your local MLA if you wish to reach out to them regarding these changes.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact our office.
